AMTRAK begins operating.
May 1, 1971
The East Coast passenger rail line was created by Congress as a federally chartered, for-profit corporation. Incorporated on March 30, 1971, it offers 11 daily trains between Boston and New York by 1972. Congress passes the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act, which gives the company regulatory power in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Transportation over the entire rail industry in 2008.
